IBJJF Worlds 2013 - 2nd place - YESSSSSS

Thanks for pushing me to be my best Professor Traven!

Despite the pretty much year-round training season I tend to keep - Worlds is definitely the culmination of it all for me. I felt like this year was going to be pivotal for me (haha, I suppose I think this every year...) because this year was my first time competing as a Purple belt. With little frame of reference as to how I'd do in this arena as well as a quite sizable division - I was definitely feeling the pressure.

Luckily, all of my hard work paid off. I fought 5 tough matches and ended up taking 2nd place in my division.

Match 1

Match 2

Match 4

Right after the finals match
I lost in my finals match to a very tough girl with 2 stripes on her belt. I was pretty upset after the match as I felt so close to something I wanted so badly. But after about 10 minutes, I shook off the disheartenment and began to really be excited and proud of what I'd done.

It was an amazing experience and really validated all of my hard work. I'm a very determined person - possibly borderline obsessive :) - and ever since I was a brand new white belt, I've had my heart set on being a World Champion. Although I didn't get there this year, I feel closer than ever and I'm truly proud of how far I've come and how far I intend to go. I love Jiu Jitsu and everything positive it has brought into my life; I can't imagine my life without it. Now time to keep preparing for next year :)

New York Open 2013 - A great trip

I had an awesome time on my trip to New York City for the NY Open. It was a weekend filled with Jiu Jitsu, friends, and family; what more could a girl ask for?

I traveled to New York on Friday and spent the day with my aunt, uncle, cousins and Granpda. It was great seeing them and their company really helped keep me relaxed. They even came and watched me compete the next day which made the experience that much better.

I went into my matches feeling good and ended up winning my division and placing third in the open weight class.

IBJJF New York Open Female Purple Belt Open - Anna Light Feather Weight

I don't always do the open weight class when I compete since I'm a light-feather weight; but I was really proud of myself for getting out there and doing well. It was a really great experience.

After the tournament, I spent the rest of the weekend with some of my favorite BJJ ladies in Times Square. We had a fabulous time eating, shopping, and just enjoying each other's company.

Purple and Silver, I'll take it - Pan Ams 2013

Pan Ams 2013 was a blast! My first IBJJF tournament as a purple belt and I got second place in my division. I lost my finals match by only 2 advantage points to a 4-stripe purple belt. I usually take losses very hard, but I did my very best against a more experienced girl, so I'm actually extremely proud of myself and super excited to do well :) The feeling of self acceptance / pride despite losing really makes me realize how far I've come as a competitor and person, and how much confidence Jiu Jitsu has instilled in me.

I trained my butt off (literally and figuratively) to get down to my light-feather class and to be sure I was as prepared as possible to compete. It never ceases to amaze me how difficult tournament prep can be but also how much I enjoy the challenge and the disciplined routine it creates for me. My BJJ journey has definitely taught me the true value of self discipline and helped me to realize how much strength I have inside me.

Now it's back to the routine in prep for the NY Open and Worlds. So excited to see what the rest of the tournament season holds!! Hopefully that silver will soon be gold :)

Side note: After competing, I always go hard on the 'bad' snacks for a few days...just to gross myself out enough that I can't wait to get back to my strict diet. See my GIANT cookie bag below for reference... post-competition snack shopping tends to get a bit out of hand :)

'My Christmas present to you' - Purple belt!!!!!

Saturday 12/23/12 was an amazing day.

Before regular Saturday morning training, Professor Traven promoted me to purple belt. As he tied on my new BEA-utiful belt, he said 'My Christmas present to you'.

Best Christmas EVER.

The whole experience was a bit surreal as I feel like it was just yesterday that this journey began. I know the road is still long, but receiving a purple belt from Professor Traven really makes me realize how far I've come.

Jiu Jitsu has added so many positive things to my life. It keeps me focused and inspires me to work hard and improve everyday. All I can really say is I'm extremely thankful Jiu Jitsu found its way into my life.  I'm completely in love with the sport and I'm so lucky to be a part of a team that truly epitomizes hard work, strength, and family.

Team Roberto Traven!
